Five Spice Crispy Chicken (Gluten Free)

This chicken is my best chicken recipe.  It's yummy and crispy and if you miss the taste of KFC (not that I do personally) this could be a good replacement.

Ingredients:

  • 1.5kg chicken wings
  • 2 tablespoons gluten free soy sauce (tamari)
  • 2 tablespoons sherry
  • 1 clove crushed garlic
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon five spice powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup tapioca starch
  • Oil

Cooking Method:

Preheat the oven to 200°C.  Pour some oil in a large oven dish and put it in the oven to heat the oil.

In a large zip lock bag mix together the sauce, sherry, garlic, ginger, five spice, salt and pepper. Add the chicken wings and roll around to coat the chicken.  Pour in the tapioca and roll around again to coat the chicken with the flour.

Heat the oil in a large frypan.  Add the wings a few at a time and fry until crispy (around 5 minutes) turning once.  Transfer the wings to the oven dish.  Cook the next batch and add to the oven dish until all the wings are crispy on the outside.

Cook in the oven for about 20 minutes or until cooked through.

Notes:

If you don't have any sherry, mix 2 tablespoons of brown sugar with one tablespoon of warm water.
