Living My Real Life

Happy weekend my friend! What a week it’s been!  We’ve had a week of full on stormy weather – torrential rain and gale force winds.

For the past few weeks we have had unseasonably warm weather.  Cool in the mornings, with a couple of frosts, but lovely warm days.  This past week has been a reminder of what’s to come as we head into winter.

In case you’re new here, I live in the Southern Hemisphere –in New Zealand which means it is now autumn. Unlike in the Northern Hemisphere, we don’t have a huge amount of deciduous trees so we don’t get the big fall of leaves. Our forests stay pretty evergreen most of the year.  Having said that, I’m enjoying seeing a few trees around the neighbourhood change colour and start to lose their leaves.

We woke up this morning to a heavy frost.  It was really cold, maybe that’s just because it’s been so warm and it was a bit of a shock. As I write this, the sun is shining in but it’s still quite chilly.

I love frosty mornings with beautiful days.  When I was a child, I used to love jumping in the frozen puddles when I walked to school.

All this cooler weather has started me dreaming about fireplaces again.  Our house is so small, we’ve thought long and hard about how we could fit a wood burning fire into our house but I’ve come to the realisation that we just can’t.  That being said, I’ve got a new plan which I’m hoping I can put into action over the next few months. I’ll keep you posted on that.

On the Blog

I had such an exciting week on the blog this week.  It was quite nice to take a break from DIY, both from writing about it but also from doing it.  A short break helps me avoid renovator’s fatigue. I’ve been thinking about some small projects I can do over the next few weeks that will keep us moving forward but not be too strenuous.

How to Choose Jewellery That Suits You

I was really excited this week to be able to share with you my conversation with Imogen Lamport.  It was just fascinating to talk about what’s involved in choosing jewellery.  I confess that I already knew most of what she had to say, having already completed Imogen’s 7 Steps to Style programme, but it’s always good to have things reinforced.

Even if you’re not interested in jewellery, this conversation is well worth the watch as Imogen drops a lot of little gems about hair, clothing, body shape, etc.

Please take the time to enjoy this conversation.

I would love to know if you enjoyed this video as much as I enjoyed my conversation with Imogen.

Ham and Cheese Scones

Cooler weather always makes me reach for comfort food.  While dates or cheese scones don’t scream cool weather to me, these ham and cheese scones certainly did.  Sharing this recipe with you made me think about why we ate so many scones when I was a child.

I was really interested to read in the comments that some people had never tried scones.  I really can’t imagine my life without scones.  I make gluten free scones (this recipe isn’t but you could easily convert this recipe by adding the ham, cheese and onion).

Please let me know in the comments section below if you make these scones.  I’d love to hear what you think of them.

Around the Web

As I said, I’ve been looking for some small projects that I can do without too much stress.  Here’s what I found.

Vintage Desk Renewal

This vintage desk renewal got me thinking about pieces of furniture I have that need some love.  Granted, I’ve not got anything hiding away that is as spectacular as this one, but I have some.  Don’t you just love it when someone finds a piece of furniture and gives it new life?  I do. My husband always laughs at me because I feel sorry for furniture (and houses) that have been neglected.  So happy to see this wonderful makeover of this desk.

Wing Back Chair Makeover

There is one thing hiding in my basement that needs some love – it’s my dirty little secret!

Are you ready to hear it?

I have a wing back chair – it’s been waiting or years for a makeover.  It used to be owned by my niece – I did a deal with her because I loved it so much. I made her a dress in return for the chair.  I’d love to make it over like this one – ah! Pink! I’ve been thinking about adding some pink to my blue and white bedroom.  This could be the inspiration I need.

What do you think?

Decoupage Night Stands

I really love this.  It’s years since I’ve done any decoupage and it certainly didn’t look like this!  Back in the 90s I made some little decoupage boxes for storing all manner of things.

Over the last few months, I’ve seen a few projects that have used decoupage on furniture, and I love it! Maybe it’s something I might try. It just so happens that there’s going to be a spare dresser in my house shortly but that’s another story.

Dresser to Vanity Conversion

This one probably isn’t stress free as changing the vanity in our bathroom would kick off an entire makeover – there’s much that needs to be done but I thought I’d share it anyway as it’s wonderful.  I especially love the colour.

Well, that’s all I have for you this week.
