How I Healed from Adrenal Fatigue

You will remember that back in June I told you that I had been diagnosed with adrenal fatigue.  I was feeling pretty miserable really because shortly after I was told that part of my pain was being caused by a flare up of fibromyalgia.  What great news!

Well, here I am, 7 months later and I’m feeling pretty great.  I thought I’d share my journey and what worked for me.

I have always known that my health is closely connected with the food I eat so I decided to start there.  I must admit, as I got sicker, my diet got worse.  Sugar and wheat laden treats had started making an appearance and chocolate had become a daily requirement.  I also know that my health is linked to my emotions.

Seeing my pain, a friend suggested I take part in the Hay House Summit, which I did.  This was greatly effective for helping me put together a plan and take control.

As part of that, I discovered Anthony William, Medical Medium and became an immediate fan. Anthony believes that mystery illnesses like adrenal fatigue and fibromyalgia are caused by Epstein Barr Virus which hides in our system until we get stressed or run down.  He also believes that we can heal by eating good food.

I started living pretty much on fruit and vegetables with only a tiny amount of chicken and fish.  I had been wheat, dairy, red meat, alcohol, sugar, tea and coffee free for years.  Now, I also cut out eggs and pork.  This made a huge change to how I felt.  Interestingly, Anthony’s opinion is that eggs and dairy affect your hormones and this made sense to me.

I discovered, in my stash of recipe books, Dr Libby’s Real Food Chef, and it became my recipe bible.  I love her philosophy on women’s health as well.

I had my hormones tested.  I had read quite a bit online about supplementing with DHEA and I wanted to see if I was deficient.  My doctor advised that my tests came back ‘normal’ but when I checked the results against what was ‘normal’ I found that my levels of DHEA were on the low side.  I decided to try supplementing with 7-Keto DHEA.  It’s important to use the 7-Keto (not DHEA) as this does not affect your testosterone levels.  I was really cautious, but had discussed it with my doctor prior to the test so I knew it was safe to take for a period of time.

Let me tell you – the first day I took the 7-Keto DHEA I felt like I could run a marathon, jump for joy and scream and yell with excitement.  I felt amazing.  This lasted for about a week before my body seemed to settle in to taking it.

I also supplemented with zinc and magnesium.  I tried 5-HTP because I was pretty depressed but that didn’t work for me.

I added meditation to my daily routine.  Andy goes to the gym at 5.30am so I spend the next half an hour meditating.

Over the next couple of months I started sleeping whole nights (which I hadn’t done in years), I noticed a huge change in my energy levels and the pain decreased dramatically.  I’ve also discovered that I feel way better when I don’t sit at my computer all day, which is hard when you have to use one for work.  Now, I get up and move around as much as I can though.  Once I started to feel physically better my mood improved and I was much more able to deal with stress.

I started exercising again.  Even though it was really hard, I went back to Pilates.  With the encouragement of my amazing Pilates instructor Tracey from Inside Out Fitness, I was able to take the class at my own pace.  Within six weeks, I was back to doing all the exercises and almost all the reps (this depends on my energy levels on any given day).  Tracey suggested massage could also help so I included visits to Karen Larsen in the regime.

So, where am I today? I can work all day without feeling like I need to sleep, I’m happy again, I can handle stress, my energy levels are good, I sleep full nights, my mood is positive and generally, I’m excited about what’s to come.  My body gives me a strong message when I eat something that I shouldn’t so I’ve found discipline to stick to my regime.

Oh, and as an amazing side effect, I’ve lost 12 kgs!

I don’t believe I’m fully healed yet, but I’m certainly on the right track.  I’m so grateful for the journey, what I’ve learned and the steps I’ve taken.  Illness happens for a reason and mine was because I needed a big wake up call.  Message received loud and clear and taken very seriously.
